Falsa

14th Century Sufi Chamber Fusion Ensemble

Falsa is a New York based Sufi music ensemble that began in Philadelphia in 2013 and has since established a strong following on the East Coast.  The instrumentation of vocal, harmonium, electric bass VI, Spanish guitar, drum set, tabla, Carnatic violin, and trumpet brings traditional melodies into a modern context in a way that is at times meditative and, at others, explosive. The lyrical content comes from the likes of classic poets Amir Khusrau, Rumi and Hafez, who touched on something essential to human existence in their writings, something that becomes even more palpable to the audience as singer Umer Piracha offers brief, soulful translations between songs. The overall feeling of a Falsa performance is that of virtuosity and transcendence.

Umer Piracha on Vocals, accompanied by Siddharth Ashokkumar on Carnatic Violin, Tom Deis and Paul Arendt on Guitars/Harmonium, Adam Hershberger on Trumpet, Roshni Samlal on Tabla, and Greg Foran on Percussion. To listen, please Click Here.

Presented by Multiflora Productions:

Rumput plays kroncong (a string-band tradition from Indonesia) and explores parallel threads with other traditions, especially old-time string-band music of the United States and British Isles, and Indonesian gamelan.

Falsa performs 14th century Sufi music, described as " the cure for alienation" and "music that's not about means to ends but about meaning and transcendence. Umer Piracha on Vocals, accompanied by Siddharth Ashokkumar on Carnatic Violin, Tom Deis on Guitar/Harmonium, Paul Arendt on Lead Guitar, and Greg Foran on Percussion. The effect of listening to Falsa is to be transported both inwards and across centuries of joys, sorrows and longings.

Kamyar Arsani is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Kamyar's musical mission is to spread cultural awareness and unity by mixing contemporary musical trends with traditional Persian folk music. Kamyar has spent over 20 years performing and researching the daf and its roots. Kamyar's songs and performances are very much inspired by the people of Iran and their history of struggle and protest.
